FED: Draft terrorism laws may threaten religion, media: report

Draft laws making it an offence to associate with terrorists have reportedly been condemned
by a bipartisan parliamentary committee.

The Senate committee believes the laws are unnecessary and have the potential to curb
legitimate activities such as religious gatherings and investigative journalism.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that members of the committee have said the consorting
laws could also affect legitimate social and religious festivals, and the giving of legal
advice.

The committee's report says the laws lack clarity and certainty and contain serious difficulties.

It recommends the government introduce a defence of reasonable excuse into the draft laws.
