WA: Ellison wants ministers to back agreement on guns
Federal Justice Minister CHRIS ELLISON says the government is committed to tacklingthe problem of illegal handguns and ensuring tougher penalties are given to those caughttrafficking weapons.
But he says claims by New South Wales police minister MICHAEL COSTA that the federalgovernment should increase broader protection measures to combat the rising number ofillegal handguns entering the country is merely politicking.
Senator ELLISON says he wrote to all state and territory Ministers just under two weeksago concerning bringing forward consideration on a national firearms trafficking agreement.
He says he's yet to receive a reply from any of them.
Senator ELLISON says he wants to discuss the proposed agreement at a meeting of theAustralian Police Ministers' Council senior officers' group in Darwin on May 23.
The proposals include calls for uniform national penalties for possession of illegalhandguns and new offences relating to the illegal manufacture and supply of firearms.
The Justice Minister says it's important to target the illegal use of guns and handguns.
