Fed: Reith appointed to European Bank for Reconstruction

CANBERRA, April 16 AAP - Peter Reith, the former defence minister at the centre ofthe children overboard scandal, was today named an executive director to the EuropeanBank for Reconstruction and Development.

Mr Reith, who retired from parliament at the last election, will be based in Londonfor the three-year posting which would start from August 1.

There has been speculation for months that Mr Reith, who was also at the centre ofa scandal over a $50,000 bill rung-up on his government-issued telecard, would land agovernment-sponsored position.

Mr Reith's position will be to represent Australia, New Zealand, Korea and Egypt onthe bank that helps central and eastern European countries make the transition to a marketeconomy.

Treasurer Peter Costello, who made the announcement, said Mr Reith was well-qualifiedfor the position.

"Mr Reith is qualified in economics and law," Mr Costello said in a statement.

Mr Costello said executive directors are employees of the bank, with their salariesand other allowances met by the organisation.
