WA: Report says Qld coroner should have held an inquest

The long-awaited report into the death of protected witness, ANDREW PETRELIS, has found
a number of concerns with the witness protection program.

Mr PETRELIS was found dead from an accidental heroin overdose in a Queensland unit
in 1995, just a month before he was due to give evidence in the drugs trial of a major
Perth crime figure.

Suspicions remain about his death.

And an ABC Four Corners Report on Monday suggested his new identity under the witness
protection program was leaked by a police officer to organised criminals.

A report by QC LEN ROBERTS-SMITH, tabled in the West Australian Parliament, found that
although there was no evidence Mr PETRELIS was murdered, the Queensland coroner should
have held an inquest into his death.

The report also found a number of concerns with regard to the police witness security
unit, including staff selection, training and counselling.

There was also concerns over financial resourcing and inadequate staffing.

Vic: RACV mechanics meet tomorrow to consider strike

Most of Victoria's motorists association's roadside help mechanics are off the road this morning.

Around 150 mechanics from the RACV are holding a meeting to consider strike action
over the holiday season.

The mechanics are considering a report on negotations over their log of claims for
improved pay and conditions.

They are represented for the first time by the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union.

Yesterday RACV spokesman DAVID CUMMING said half the number of service staff would
be on duty during the meeting.

He would not comment on how the RACV will cope if the mechanics strike over Christmas,
but says he doesn't believe this will happen.

Queensland police said later Ms Hewson appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court today charged
with a weapons offence.

She pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a weapon and was released, with no fine or
conviction recorded, a police spokeswoman said.

The charge was unrelated to the Darwin shootings, the spokeswoman said.

Network Nine news reported tonight Ms Hewson had been in possession of a 30cm knife when
she walked into Fortitude Valley police station in inner Brisbane last night.
